Last minute calls...
After a couple of days of the promoters/venue being crap and not returning calls, last night at 6pm I got approval for a photo-pass for Queensryche at the Wulfrun Hall.

Wow.

Needless to say after standing around like a lemon not quite sure what to do, I had an incredible "three songs, no flash" literally pointing my camera up the nose of the band. It's such an incredible experience being sandwiched between (admittedly with the help of security guards and a big metal barrier) 700 baying, sweaty fans and their idols. There were three of us shooting - myself, a chap who does twenty-million rock-journalism related jobs and Marshall Amps Official UK Photographer (what a job!).

I only ran off 60-odd images (one card) using the same lens - and will put some of the results up in the next week or so. Probably as exciting as the band was having a nice chat with one of the other photographers who was very helpful, and promised to stay in touch and help me get passes again in the future. Bring on the next gig!

Even the fact I was up working until 12:45 on my return can't ruin it!

Two quick camera dumps behind the cut.

Did they play Silent Lucidity? ;-) I iz shamefully ignorant and that's the only song by them I know...

Are you in London today, BTW?

Dunno many of the tracks - quondam is the huge fan - not me!

If it helps it was mainly Operation Mindcrime and Empires tracks. Apparently.

Means nothing to me! Did quondam get to go too? (Or was she going anyway?)

Oo.. I love Queensryche, must dig albums out and have a listen again now :-)

I think I'm going to see if I cant attempt some decent gig photography once I'm mobile again. Might invest in a digital SLR, have a film SLR camera and a Canon G2 digital which is OK but hasnt got the flexibility of an SLR.

Gig photography is great. Just getting into it. Have had to use flash occasionally when the lighting is poor...

Fabulous pics man! That 85mm prime lens?

Proper gigs don't seem to allow flash - but the lighting is so much better you don't need to. Mind you the band spend most of the time being dazzled by the flash from the other cameras in the audience.

These are all with the 70-200 2.8, but the chap I was next to was using a 28-300 Sigma which is quite a few stops slower - which surprised me.

Yeah at the gig I was at, the left hand side of the stage was so poorly lit I had to use flash a couple of times. It is a semi professional venue of indy bands so they do not mind.

The 28-300 is not an EX lens so you do not get as good quality or as fast glass. It's basically similar to my 70-300, I did consider it (it's about £200). I decided on my 70-300 as it shares the same filter size as the rest of my lens collection.

But boy that new lens is sharp and sweet. Nice purchase. **jealous**

Last night I swapped between the 70-200, the 85 and the 18-50 over the course of the set as they didn't care about having more than 3 songs. The best results are with the 85 of course... can't beat a nice prime. I'll upload some ~at some point~.

Is this all leading to something serious, or just a hobby?

I would love it to become more serious, but it's only a hobby at the moment. I've a long way to go before getting good at it. Still, have to start somewhere.

Mind you, I am doing another gig tonight...

Does photo-journalism pay well?
