[GPP] Keeping up with myself
Rarely I impress myself - but some of these I really quite like.

Anthrax Last Night

I had a couple more cunning ideas about ways to get into gigs, and what to do with the best of these. Hard work ahead methinks.

Are all hobbies such hard work?

My god that man has a fat neck.

In other news; very impressive, very pro-fesshunul and very cool. So, when do you sack off the day job?

Sack off the day job? As soon as I can get money out of anyone for any of these.

I have this ambition to sell one this year - it may involve pawning a print around on NYE...

Selling ones easy. Getting a good price for it is harder. Local small galleries / pubs / bars with art space are the way forward. They don't usually want to see a CV, just samples of your work.

I'm not fussy - technicalities count!

Sell em to people like Metal Hammer, Kerrang1 or other assorted music rags, either that or contact the bands directly to see if they want to purchase the pictures for use in future artwork / album covers?

is that enough 'r's'?

It's quite hard to get an "in" to such magazines. I've tried, but need to persevere. If anyone knows anyone...

ed_fortune knows a young lady by the name of Emma Johnson who works in band reviewing for Radio 1 and also writes for such Rags on occasion. She may be amenable to poking people or at least getting your portfolio looked at.

I had forgotten young Ed's prediliction for the media spotlight. Would you be able to poke him on my behalf?
nattydreadi From: nattydreadi Date: June 22nd, 2004 12:48 am (UTC) (Link)
Certainly, he was a lahndan journalist for a while so he may know even more people than we think!

Me? A Meeja-whore? Only a little bit, I'm trying to cut down. :)

I'll prod the young Ms Johnson (she's a reviews editor for Kerrang!) in the direction of your site. Kerrang! is Emap, so be prepared for some barter when it comes to getting paid (actually, that goes for most of the music rags.)

Haven't talked to Rory or Will for a while, they work for Touch and Time Out respectively, but I'll see what I can do.

Cheers :-) Should I get anywhere expect to have free booze delivered by a random army of Eidolons at Maelstrom ;-)

Will do. If Em's not heard of him, Simon Young probably will have, he's been there since ever.

Apparently he works for Q these days.

Like the contrast between the lone band figures and the two crowd pictures. The bottom picutre of the scary bald man in the black singing itnimately into the microphone framed between the two pics of arm-waving fans is an effective arrangement. I can't help saying things like that. Sorry.

I considered flipping the bottom left crowd pic to draw the line into the middle, but decided that while layout of the thumbnails was important, it wasn't the focus of the page.

However, thanks - I missed getting crowd pics the first time and they are actually really interesting IMO.

Kerrang! wise, you need to talk to: Caroline Fish and Lucy Bryant.

I showed the main Kerraing! picture to Emma Jonhston, and she said that you should send some pics to: caroline.fish@emap.com .
(or better, a link to some pics.)

Hope that helps.

Cheers Ed - just picked this up today - damn flakey email notification.

I've cold-emailled Caroline before, but I'll put together a better crafted note and try again over the next couple of days.

I suspect that she gets hundreds of "cold-calling" emails so it's a matter of perseverence. I'll let you know how it goes...
