Good Day, Bad Day
So, yesterday was a bit crappy ending with one more star in ratty heaven, and I spent 4 hours in a nasty smelly venue.

But still - you can see my pics on Radio 1's Website - http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/stevelamacq/. The main front page pic of The Killers and gallery pics are mine.

For those that care, it was the NME Awards Showcase, and the bands were Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, The Futureheads and The Killers.

More later, probably much later.

Bless the dears at Radio 1 though, they don't even offer any expenses, and then I get this "We offered it out at short notice and were only looking for very keen volunteers who wanted the opportunity to go to the show and say they had photographed for Radio 1. We hadn't expected to get a real professional photographer."

Almost makes it worth it.

Current Mood: okay okay

Heh. The BBC is a GBP 2.5 Bn/year corporation, I'm surprised they aren't willing to pay anything for content. It won't be long before you can demand, and get, a bowl of M&Ms with all the green ones taken out, etc :-)

Yeah - I knew I was chancing my luck asking for £2.20 in bus fares and the same for a bottle of water.

:(

Sorry to hear about your rat.

Dear me, Radio 1 are cheeky buggers! Does that happen often?

Waaah. Stop seeing bands I idolise! :)

I think that's a fantastic thing for them to have said, by the way. I know it's annoying not to get expenses, but I do think that's worth it. You rule.

Yeah - but words are cheap :-) I did consider using the camera in my phone to get that "fan-photo" experience...

I do think of you at each of these gigs. If that helps. Kaiser Chief were the most impressive on the bill btw - one to watch definitely.

Oddly enough, it really does help, yes. Thank you. :)

And, oh yes? What kind of music then? ~is curious~

Similar style to the Killers etc - whatever that is called. Guitar/Indie/Rock'n'Pop.

I'm not really up on the terminology tbh.

Heh. The Killers have a song on their album called Glamorous Indie Rock'N'Roll and I can't really argue with that. They're American Art-Rock, though, I suppose, if I can't get away with Glamorous Indie Rock'N'Roll as a genre...

Nice of the BBC to describe you so, even if they are gits in other respects :) I'll be seeing the same gig when it lurches down to London, and am rather looking forward to it.

Sorry to hear about the rat :(

Hey, congratulations on going pro... In a kinda not being paid manner :(

"Amazing" pictures, no less.

I think Radio 1 have been doing stuff like this for a while, using a keen amateur and essentially paying them with tickets to the event or whatever. I'm in two minds about it, I mean it's great for the fan in question and it's nice to see them spreading their press access around, but on the other hand there is a case for using paid professionals...
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: January 25th, 2005 06:28 pm (UTC) (Link)
The argument I've had from the Beeb is that they don't actually have the resources to pay for pros. Internal staffers normally get "time off in lieu" but externals have to settle for "name in lights".

The stuff I normally do is "gigs I want to see" or "gigs I want to shoot for portfolio"; but this was different because (effectively) they approached me.

Press access isn't actually that hard to get when it comes down to it - there are still plenty of "freelance journalists" out there of whatever sort - but sometimes you need a high chutzpah stat when dealing with record companies/PR agencies etc.

ISTR the chap on photo.net said there are no full-time professional concert photographers, the pros that do it make their bread and butter from music magazine editorial work, band or musician portraits for magazines or album covers, product shots, etc.

I agree, it's mostly just a matter of asking, and not taking it personally if they say no. I think I've needed a "real" credential (that I don't have) only once and that was to get into 10 Downing Street!

Though I tried to look at your photos and it seemed not to show any....

Well done for the photos, they really are great. Plus, Lamaq's site gets more than a fair number of hits, so hopefully something more will come of it.

p.s. I'm crying over the ratty, but I am a soft-hearted bastard with a terrible weak spot for rats. I miss mine terribly, even after four years. [hug]

Go you!

Shame that there was no reimbursement, lets hope that the publicity that it brings will offset that.
