Help needed
I did just spend over £200 on underwear, but that's not what I need help with.

dreamfire has pointed out, not for the first time, that I put too many pictures up on the web after a gig. I do agree with her, but have a huge problem culling "the best" from the "the rest". (Of course I do cull already, but not ~enough~).

So, I'm looking for help and need an editor. Not to photoshop, but to find the interesting, exciting and impressive from the repetitive, mediocre and uninspiring.

And to this end - a poll!

Poll #437947 Kill my babies!

Are you up for the job?

Yes
13(92.9%)
No
1(7.1%)

Just my view

Because this sort of thing always makes me sit up and bark.

Put everything up that pleases you. That which has merit will survive if it has room to be observed. That which has nothing memorable will be forgotten. Make the choices that please you and to hell with everyone else!

Of course this is nothing more than my opinion; I believe art should revel in abundance. Good strong editing is necessary but very rare indeed; there are more willing to do it than able to. Trust your own choices. The perfect baby murderer is sterility personified

Re: Just my view

I get what you're saying and it might be any "experiment" will be short-lived. At the moment I frustrate myself by not being concise and punchy from the start.

I certainly don't want sterility and will resist any suggestions along those lines but equally I'm not sure that the site I'm trying to build is as effective as it could be in it's current format.

I certainly never throw any pictures away.

Re: Just my view

that would make sense if it weren't for that fact that he wants a career. he needs to make his website look like a portfolio, and currently isn't making any choices at all but is posting everything.
I agree that the best choices would be his own, - but in the absence of that an editor becomes essential

Re: Just my view

hmmm finish thinking before pressing send...

your "room to be observed" phrase is the absolute key to it. The nature of photo display on webspace without using slide shows is just that - the photos really don't have room to be observed - they fight with each other badly and lose

I would be happy to help, although I like having them all up there - I find it gives a broader perspective on the concert, rather than edited highlights.
gaius_octavian From: gaius_octavian Date: February 15th, 2005 07:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
True, but that's not the purpose of a portfolio. It's like a CV, you don't list everything you've ever done, just the important bits.

The statistics of editing at the top-end of the market are staggering. The photo editors of Sports Illustrated go through 16,000 images to find a cover shot!
kissmeforlonger From: kissmeforlonger Date: February 15th, 2005 04:03 pm (UTC) (Link)
I don't have a trained eye but have done this kind of thing for work and choosing images for the picture library, etc. Happy to help if needed (and providing it doesn't take *too* much time ;-) Besides I like your pics and looking through them doesn't sound like a hardship.
yapman From: yapman Date: February 15th, 2005 04:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
The only thing about your images that irritates me is their size. Not the download thing, but the fact that they're usually nice and big and screw up my entire friends list for reading. I understand why you don't want them behind cut tags, but would some SIZE settings hurt much?

The sheer number certainly doesn't bother me much - granted it might mean I actually look at less of them, but it might not ...
kingandy From: kingandy Date: February 15th, 2005 04:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
I am fond of http://pics.livejournal.com which not only generates preview images (both smaller dimensions and smaller filesize) but happily creates appropriate layout code for posting to LJ. Also it uses their bandwidth instead, what's not to like? Does require a paid account, of course...

I am a logs-freak. It builds my sense of self-worth.
kingandy From: kingandy Date: February 15th, 2005 04:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
Of course, at the moment you just get to see how many times people load their Friends pages, rather than how many times the pictures are looked at ... but hey, if that's what you're after.
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: February 15th, 2005 04:22 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's not perfect - but it gives me ~something~; and the logs give me an idea who is clicking through to the pages themselves.
gaius_octavian From: gaius_octavian Date: February 16th, 2005 07:32 am (UTC) (Link)
That gives me an idea - why not put the whole lot on line, then 6 weeks later cull it to the 10 most popular according to the logs? That's something that should be easily automateable, and it would spare you the pain of doing it yourself...
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: February 16th, 2005 07:41 am (UTC) (Link)
I had thought of that - but I don't think it works. The number of people who actually click on thumbnails is tiny so I don't count it as valid. Plus I suspect that would weight to the "top" rather than "bottom" of the page.
gaius_octavian From: gaius_octavian Date: February 16th, 2005 07:51 am (UTC) (Link)
Would you mind adding me to the group? I probably won't have too much useful to add (hence ticking no) but I'm interested in the process.
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: February 16th, 2005 08:06 am (UTC) (Link)
Consider yourself added.
davefish From: davefish Date: February 18th, 2005 05:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
If the group is opt-in then can I do that too.

On underwear: The first step is admitting you have a problem.
kissmeforlonger From: kissmeforlonger Date: February 15th, 2005 04:31 pm (UTC) (Link)
You weren't purchasing goth underwear by any chance Simon? Somebody must buy the stuff, but nobody seems to want to admit to it *grin*
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: February 15th, 2005 04:37 pm (UTC) (Link)
Like that rather odd stuff you linked to a while back? No fear!

Ski-underwear - hence the ludicrous expense. I suppose it could count as goth as I suspect it'll be equally suitable for North Yorkshire in October.

For two hundred quid? What's wrong with thermals from M and S?! I dunno!
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: February 15th, 2005 04:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ah, but M&S don't use wool from hand-reared New Zealand sheep that have a higher standard of living, more cable channels than I do and room service.

Plus I did buy two sets.
kissmeforlonger From: kissmeforlonger Date: February 15th, 2005 09:43 pm (UTC) (Link)
...and this makes you warmer, does it? *raises eyebrows*

What's wrong with Cumbrian sheep, anyway... ;-)

I think I shall put away the shovel and dig myself no more holes at this point :-)
bacony From: bacony Date: February 15th, 2005 05:43 pm (UTC) (Link)
I would be happy to cull my way through your pictures. I sometimes do the same for Andy, and though I have absolutely no qualifications or experience, I do have fun picking my favourite bits out of other people's work.

So long as you do not refer to it as 'Killing your babies' in my presence, because that freaks me out :)
davefish From: davefish Date: February 15th, 2005 06:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
How many you want depends on what the target audience is. If I go to a gig, or am interested in a band then I'll probably want quite a few photos, the more the better really.

If you are after something more akin to self-advertising then only a few is likely better. Could you do both, with a 'Gig portfolio' with a lot from a specific gig, and then another section with only the best on it, where you could use as something more promotional.
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: February 15th, 2005 11:25 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yes - I'm pretty sure I'm going to go somewhere in that direction. Nightwish was ++good btw - no three song limit.

If you ask nicely I'll show you it sometime...
ikkleblacktruck From: ikkleblacktruck Date: February 16th, 2005 07:26 am (UTC) (Link)
Not too much, just too big. You know your LJ pix are too big when they distort the normal size of the viewing pane... (but then again that's probably just the style I picked).
