Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Fun, well done, top squirrels but the main irritation were the creeping Americanisms. I know I shouldn't care so much, or let them irritate me as much, but perhaps I'm just in an irritable kind of mood.

I certainly don't seem to be in the kind of mood where I write a lot, that's for sure. Move along.

Current Mood: cranky cranky

Americanisms? I didn't see it because it looked too creepy. What are you refering to?

Just some of the language - for example "candy" which was used heavily in the film is hardly ever used in the UK; and the whole transplation of the story to a US setting.

It's not creepy at all.

Of course, what I've not done is checked what the book actually said...

What do people in the UK call candy?
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: August 14th, 2005 08:31 pm (UTC) (Link)
"Candy" meaning chocolate and other confectionery are just called "sweets".

I learn something new everyday...
It was supposed to be in America? Wasn't Charlie from England though? How did they explain that?

They didn't. Charlie's family were all English; they weren't consistent with what side of the road people drove on and "dollars" were used as the currency.

Hmm odd. How hard would have been to use pounds?
I wish you could come here and take pictures of Wim & I. Pictures are the only wedding thing that I think is really important.

:-) You can get cheap airfares these days - add it to your wedding expenses and I'll see if I'm free ;-)

And they kept referring to the shop as the "store".

I thought they managed to make the town they lived in look liked a grim (English) northern town. With an eccentric American factory in the middle.

It's so long since I read the book I really couldn't remember what had changed.

One thing I noticed which I thought was rather sinister and hyper-real was the way all the character's faces were shot in smooth-o-vision. They'd been treated to look a bit like 3D animations, I think. I wanted all of Mr Depp's outfits, they were lovely.

It lacked substance a bit though, and I couldn't hear any of the Umpalumpa lyrics which probably contributed to this.
