So, this is Christmas...

Hang on - I'm sure I've done at least one update since then. It probably wasn't very good mind.

The short story is that I went skiing, I came home, I went to London, I looked at photographs of miserable ginger girls with freckles, I went skiing again, I came home, I was made redundant.

The long story is a whole lot more rambling...

Skiing over Christmas was great. Much better than the whole family thing and was a mix of scratchy skiing, cheese and Kafka. I can't say a lot about the Kafka yet as I've not finished it* as this last holiday I instead had Sudoku.

Back in the UK I had a tough week at work and pretty much failed to answer any emails. Then it was off to London for the annual BETT show and (more importantly) visit to the Schweppes Photo Prize 2005 at the National Portrait Gallery. This was, as with previous years, dominated by pretty ropey pictures of people looking very miserable. However the company of Chiara WINOLJ and ruana1 gave me an audience and a reason to vocalise my amusement.

Then it was off skiing again. Christmas was Saas Fee and this week was St Anton - my first time in Austria - which was pretty much like all the other German speaking countries I've been to, except there were fewer locals and most of the shops and bars were populated by Aussies and Brits. Skiing went Scratchy-Scratchy-Blizzard-Blizzard-Lovely-Lovely-Blizzard. By the end of the week I was shattered.

Highlight, at least in terms of physical "highs" was when, on a ski route, I literally took off after misreading the terrain - shot straight up in the air and landed on my back with my skis buried 2ft vertically in the snow - with the rest of me still attached. Yikes.

There will be a handful of photos soon - but I only used by phone so don't expect anything special.

On the flight back quondam and I were discussing how if we were in LOST then the passengers would need to be a whole lot better looking to survive.

Yesterday I had my redundancy notice. This is both bad (in terms of losing my job if people don't agree that I'm worth employing after the end of March) and good (in that they'll give me nearly £3k and I'm ready to leave). I think I'd like to be made redundant - as long as one of the many other things I've got on the go sort themselves out soon.

Following this I had notification of a paper being accepted at TNC 2006. This shouldn't impress the many proto-distinguished academics on the list but should be fun if I actually get there***.

Finally today I've been enjoying Life on Mars and The Virgin Queen on Telewest - Teleport. It is strangely convinient and could definitely grow on me.

Now I have the urge to paint people and take photographs. Volunteers?

Working through emails slowly. If I owe you one, then expect it soon...

* Mind you, I'm told he didn't either
** Those other than us of course
*** If I have a job to give me the time/air-fare

I would be content to be painted, if by that you mean sit for a portrait. I am less keen on being daubed with pigment, having had quite enough of that in a previous life.

I have a private bet with myself about this comment.

Actually I mean both - so I'll take what I can get. Consider yourself on the list for future hassling.

What was the bet?

The best thing about bets with yourself is that you always win.

I'm still interested :)

Excellent! Painted literally or metaphorically?
From: (Anonymous) Date: January 24th, 2006 07:59 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm sure that's not the distinction you mean. How does one paint someone metaphorically? :)

(Actually, I suppose I've seen painting used metaphorically to describe writing about someone. But I still don't think that's what you meant.)

Painting metaphorically = Capturing their image = Taking a portrait photograph.

Perhaps when you're up, or sometime I'm down. Though that's less often these days.

Being as I'm good at looking ugly for photos how can I resit the urge to offer?

"Now I have the urge to paint people and take photographs. Volunteers?"

Ooh! Me, me! Though, you know, time and distance conspire.

I'm actually please to hear your comments on the Schweppes thing - I wandered round the exhibition in the NPG going "I - don't - get - it".

I ate cake and drank tea in the cafe, but on the way out the pictures still didn't seem interesting, good, or prizeworthy to me.

PS If you want a challenge, you're welcome to photograph/paint me ;)
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: January 25th, 2006 06:50 am (UTC) (Link)
I'd love to. Though in case it's not clear when I say "paint" I mean "attack the person with paint and then photograph the results". This is probably clearly to my rubber-sword related acquaintances than the "special-in-other-ways" contingent.

It's been widely panned in the press and Schweppes have announced they will not be sponsoring it next year.

However there are possibilities and I might try getting photos off my friends looking miserable and staring at the camera just in case...

Perhaps another category for the photo-competition, or a special award for "most-Schweppesy"?

I like my days to go Blizzard - Blizzard - Blizzard - Blizzard .... you get the idea.

I can't find the double asterisk referenced in your notes at the bottom, but presume it is meant to be linked to the LOST on the plane remark?

Chin up re jobs, Mr Bond.
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: January 25th, 2006 07:25 am (UTC) (Link)
Well spotted. Actually it was deliberate, as the ** should go at character 73 of the line, which is the sum of 42+23+8 which are of course three of the LOST numbers.

Clever eh!
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: January 25th, 2006 07:29 am (UTC) (Link)
Or, if put at the end of the line - position 137. Which is of course 108 (the sum of the numbers) + (42/(8/4). Which in itself is 4 numbers (the first of the six numbers, relies on heavy use of division - which is typically the fourth operator (+-*/) when listed.

My god, how bored are you?
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: January 25th, 2006 11:15 am (UTC) (Link)
Just making a point about the many numerical "coincidences".

Thought I'd replied to this at the time - apparently not.

Happy to be painted / photographed

Have spent many years patiently sitting for life drawing for my mum so if you ever get short of volunteers...
