Odd Requirements
I've just been sent a spreadsheet about my attendance at a conference in sunny Newcastle later this year. This is in itself a good thing as I intend to stop on the way up and see ayrton_nix for dinner in York (plus ant_girl if she's around but I've not asked her yet).

Anyway - on the list I've been shamed to all my colleagues for being a vegetarian, so I feel no compunction in sharing the most bizarre dietary reqiuirement on the list:

Highly allergic to lettuce

Is such a thing really possible??

I've seen the weirdest allergies which were extremely specific (for example cream but not other milk products like cheese or yogurt) so it wouldn't surprise me if there was someone with a lettuce allergy. There's probably something in lettuce other vegetables don't have and that's what's causing the reaction.

The heftiest reaction I've witnessed was a friend who opened the kitchen door from the outside while I was chopping some garlic. He basically keeled over on the doorstep (still being about three metres away from me) and had to be led away. Actually giving him garlic to eat would most likely kill him. Scary.

Rabbits should not be fed lettuce, they cant digest it propperly.

Another rabbit fact brought to you by: Averylaterabbit.

I other news; I can eat tofu and soy beans and stuff and freshly squeesed soy milk (ie squeezed there and then) but my throat closes up when I drink the packaged stuff. Ive not died yet though, and so far the occasion tyimes ive had it, its not been a huge reaction but very deffinite and a very weird experience, and as I understand reactons can get stronger so I dont chance it.

Lactucarium (or "Lettuce Opium") is a mild opiate-like substance that is contained in all types of lettuce.

Eat too much of it and it'll kill ya ;)

My plan was to crash in York then complete my journey to Newcastle the next morning - so no time pressure at all.
ant_girl From: ant_girl Date: September 1st, 2006 03:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
Excellent. :-) You staying at Nicki's? Or do you need crash space?
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: September 1st, 2006 03:49 pm (UTC) (Link)
Nicki's was the plan.

I used to work on a lettuce farm. The sap that seeped out of the lettuce was so full of pesticides you had to wear barrier cream or you'd get a toxic rash. I'd never eat farmed lettuce if I were you.
