[GPP] Rotersand & Revolution By Night
Now, it must be said that shooting gigs at Slimelight/Electrowerkz is probably a hobby for a masochist. The light is f-ing awful; three people in the venue make it look crowded and the whole place is covered with a layer of grime that would make the inside of my car engine look like a sterile environment.

Anyway - I'll put them up as something that's a "bit different" and the nice chaps at Rotersand have already been in touch and asked to use the photos on the website. So without further build up...

Rotersand Rotersand
Revolution By Night Revolution By Night

I can't remember if I've reviewed the gig yet either - in summary: Rotersand ++good, better than Infest in many ways; RBN didn't seem to have moved on since the other times I've seen them this year.

I dare you to take a pic of me one day where I don't look like a tard. :P

I would love to try. I can even envisage some interesting shots of you amongst your work.

Alas, you're in LA...

Maybe when you're rich and famous you can fly me over; or the next time I'm passing on holiday!
redstorm From: redstorm Date: December 12th, 2006 08:46 am (UTC) (Link)
I may pop into town in May. ;)
I'd like to see people if time permits.
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: December 12th, 2006 08:49 am (UTC) (Link)
Right then - it's a date. Well, nearly.

kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: December 12th, 2006 10:20 am (UTC) (Link)
Yes - I have it somewhere. I haven't finished all the "spacker" set of people from Infest yet.

And yes, still up for Jan. Can you check with the organiser they're not going to get anal about me taking photos. Who is it anyway?

the orginiser is sahra orange, also the club owner, i am one of the club investers therefore i cant see any problems with orginised, professional photography taking place. ofcource i cant speek for the other bands but im sure if you wave some examples of your work in their face they will be woo'ed
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: December 12th, 2006 10:59 am (UTC) (Link)
I can think of at least one who will complain...

What's the best way of talking this through some more? Do you know the other bands? Can you make an initial contact with Sahra on my behalf?

I should be able to get a little press coverage out of it for you too.
crm From: crm Date: December 12th, 2006 04:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
all publicity is good publicity.

drop me an e-mail to info@coreline.net and i will mail you back with information regarding contacting the managment and other bands involved.

Done.
davefish From: davefish Date: December 12th, 2006 05:21 pm (UTC) (Link)
The colourful ones do have some fantastically strong colouring in them. I thought the same of your ones from Kryogenix, have you changed how you are processing stuff, or is that just coincidental?

I know that you didn't like the venue for shooting in, but this lot came out well given what you've said about it.
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: December 12th, 2006 05:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's a venue without light! I had to use Flash!

In terms of processing I switched (as you can tell) between exaggerated colour to counter the flash and oh-god-can-I-save-this-in-mono.

There's a little something there as you say, but not much.

Firstly, congrats on getting anything at all out of that gig!
Secondly, given our usual tardy work-rate, and rare busy-ness live this year, I was a bit confused as to how we "move on" in one year! Two new songs since our last UK gig not enough? Greedy!

:-)

I just kept repeating to myself that I enjoyed working in hostile environments.

The "moving on comment" was based on my impressions of having seen you three times in 2006 (making you one of the bands I've seen most this year!). While I enjoyed what you did and of course Steve had an immediate connection with the Slimelight crowd (but also some nerves?) I didn't feel that there was a noticeable "improvement" compared to earlier gigs.

Obviously I can't speak for before this year (as I'd never seen RBN before 2006) whereas I've seen some bands come on in leaps and bounds I felt you've kinda plateaued. This seems to happen to many artists and they need to "break" out of this to get to the next level - that could probably be crudely categorised as the leap from "support" to "headline". It's not trivial and to be blunt there's a huge number of acts who never make it.

At least that's my impression! I expect you'd find others that will disagree - but I just hope that makes some sense. And of course best of luck for 2007!!!

And the same to you!

Yep, there's always that "where do we go from here" worry, and I said to someone afterwards that we weren't a headline band yet, altho we could, as support, make the difference between a good gig and a better one... That said, in the UK there's not a great deal of choice of appropriate bands.

We're still getting into our stride I think; the Covenant date in May were our first for 2 years, and we only played once in 2004. As constructive criticism is no bad thing, was it songs or general performance that gave you that impression?
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: December 13th, 2006 12:25 pm (UTC) (Link)
Very good points there. Certainly you succeeded in making "a good gig better" - I guess I want all the bands who I've shot and who have been nice to me to go onto great things :-)

It was a general impression - next time I'll try and think more constructively at the time! (if you let me in that is!!!). It is probably fair to say I see so many gigs, large and small, that I'm quite hard to impress.

Also, it probably must be said that having your "best known song" being a remix doesn't do you any favours. You need the next floorpacker to be the "album version" so to speak.

Finally I didn't realise you'd gigged so little - I assumed I was a latecomer to your music. If I was looking at you as "a new band in 2006" (which sounds like a reasonably fair interpretation) I'd be more impressed and less critical about "not being a headline yet".
dj_steve_rbn From: dj_steve_rbn Date: December 13th, 2006 12:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
Indeed - we've hardly played at all, and the 2004 gig wasn't even in the UK!

The vast majority of the current live set has been written this year too.

The thing we need to do is get the album tracks finished, recorded, produced, and released - until then we have no chance of replacing (or at least complementing) the Ronan Harris Remix of Faithless as our most well known track.

I think our songs City Lights, Machine Code and Someone Else all have the potential to do that.

I think you saw gig 1, 4 and 7. My personal opinion is that the London Covenant support was the best gig for us: biggest crowd and best reaction (due to the audience size).

As for the Slimelight show, during our set I'm pretty sure that I said I was nervous to be on stage at Slimelight rather than behind the DJ box! It was quite an odd feeling!
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: December 13th, 2006 12:54 pm (UTC) (Link)
I shall look forward to even better things to come then!!

And yes, I remember you mentioning your nerves, as well as how you couldn't see anything on stage!

I'll be staying in touch :-)
dj_steve_rbn From: dj_steve_rbn Date: December 13th, 2006 12:58 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, I couldn't see the set list!!!
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: December 13th, 2006 01:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
Nothing important then!

At the Levellers last week Mark Chadwick made some comment along the lines of "Oh come on Mark - remember which bloody song you're singing" and he had no excuses!
