Ooh! My donkey is called Charlie, and he lives at the Donkey Sanctuary in Sutton!

Isn't he cute?! We went to see him a few months ago, and he completely ignored me, and then spent 10 minutes rolling around on the floor, snorting. Fantastic! :)

I <3 Ma Donkeh!

You're kidding me. Donkeys are hardly an endangered species and I don't see what they exaclty need sanctuary from - Britain isn't exactly high in donkey predators, is it? And what role do they serve in this post-industrial age apart from giving rides to kids on beaches?

I don't see why donkey charities get so much cash when there are far more deserving causes out there - I'd rather fund getting homeless people off the street (and I do through Shelter) or a cure for cancer. But no, thanks to some kind of British misguided sense of charity:

These are troubled times for charities and we are finding it hard to dig deep for handicapped people, children and the elderly. But one thing seems immune to recession - donkeys. Tim Dowling visits the sanctuary in Devon which looks after 75% of the donkeys in Britain, and wonders why we send them £13m a year.

Most animals are so much nicer than most people though.

And donkeys need sanctuary from kids and beaches. Their biggest predator is man - being treated like shit for our "entertainment".

Sorry, this is just a cop-out line and doesn't address the point I was trying to make at all.

How are we their predators? We don't kill them (at least not in this country).

Can you justify over £13 million annually being given to donkeys when it could be used for much more worthy charities or causes? Can anyone? Probably not...

But it wouldn't be given to anyone else, as it comes from people who want to spend it on donkeys. People have a right to donate money to whatever cause they wish, don't they? Why is a homeless, innocent donkey a less worthy cause than a person? Don't forget, neglect kills - so in that sense, we are donkey predators.

Ok - more seriously - we are their predators. We breed them, we use them, then when they cease to be useful we simply ~dispose~ of them.

That is not an arrangment I wish to be associated with.

Yes, it seems like a lot of money to be spent that could (theoretically) be spent in other ways - but it's a drop in the ocean compared to military spending for example. If as a nation we wanted to end homelessness or really push medical research then we could cut down on the number of cruise missiles we fired at Iraq.

I'm not even going to get into this. Oh look, I just have. So Simon and I give some of our hard-earned pennies to a bloody donkey sanctuary. Go us.

I don't feel that by doing this we have become super-beings upon a big soap-box, cleansed of all our sins, and neither do I expect Simon (or anyone) to get a virtual kick in the teeth for not supporting the "right" charity.

Maybe I'm just too damn soft, but I think it's bloody nice when anyone gives any charity some support.

At least he's not spending it on illegal drugs and hookers.

I'm probably not making much sense as I am still half-delirious from the 'flu.

I already said I wasn't going to continue this. Oh look, I just have. I can make pointless statements too, y'see.

Maybe I'm just too damn soft, but I think it's bloody nice when anyone gives any charity some support.

And how do you feel when smaller charities have to fold, because they struggle to get the cash together for their administration charges, let alone put it to the good use they intended?

Maybe I'm just too damn cynical, but I think it's bloody stupid when certain charities are getting over £13 million a year and others can't make ends meet. Especially when those smaller charities will fund housing for creatures who understand the concept of housing and would appreciate "underfloor heating."

I don't feel that by doing this we have become super-beings upon a big soap-box, cleansed of all our sins...

From my perspective you must get some kick out of it, by the way you seem to qualify it with...

At least he's not spending it on illegal drugs and hookers.

And what's wrong with that? You seem to be of the opinion "it's my cash, let me do what I bloody well like with it" - by that reasoning, what's so wrong if someone wants to use their cash on sex and drugs?

Anyway. I'm done with this.

Brilliant! By following your link I was able to find another nodding donkey for a friend's car to match mine! That's me sorted for Xmas, thank Donkey!

PS. You better not be numbering me amongst the tree-hugging-hippy fraternity... :)
