I'm with NThelL already and have no cap on my internet usage. But they are crap and I SHALL be switching as soon as my contract allows.

What's Telewest's costumer service like? They might be able to teach NTL some tricks or at least make sure you don't have to spend half an hour waiting on the line...

It's not too bad. I did have a typical conversation with them after my cable modem blew up:

"My modem has exploded"
"What is your OS?"
"It's not a problem with the OS. The modem is smoking."

Heh. Ooops.

Typical scripted support. I used to get pretty good service once I learned their script:

"Your DNS is down. I have tried x, y, and z, and I do this for a living. Trust me and let me talk to your second line guys."

It also meant I could bypass their OS question completely so they didn't choke on my non-Microsofty ways.

The guy who turned up in the van was much better...

"What's the problem?"
"The modem blew up"
"Right, I'll get another one from the van then."

NTL tech support are a team of barely-trained monkeys with a script, who know nothing about the equipment or services they provide. The engineers are decent blokes though.

This Sunday our broadband went down, Tech Support asked "what OS are you using?" I told them the OS made no bloody difference, I wasn't getting a signal and proceeded to list the cable modem event log - silence. "We'll have to send an engineer." Bloody morons. Checked with Mark, his was down too, so it was an area fault which they *swore* it wasn't. Engineer who rang me today to check if he should bother coming out confirmed it was an area fault (notice they are so used to being sent on wild goose chases they actually check with the customer before turning up!)

However, on the plus side, this means you will get the 10Mb upgrade with everyone else.

Telewest announced an uncapped 10MB service about 24 hours after NTL announced their 10MB capped offering.

Guess everyone can kiss that goodbye - besides, who pulls 30GB a month?!
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: October 3rd, 2005 03:40 pm (UTC) (Link)
I've pulled 20GB so far this month on my main PC.
From: ikkleblacktruck Date: October 4th, 2005 06:20 am (UTC) (Link)
What on earth with? Even WoW barely reaches a gig a month.
kneeshooter From: kneeshooter Date: October 4th, 2005 06:46 am (UTC) (Link)
Actually I lie, it's 20Gb so far. Just "stuff".

No cap on NTL as far as I know. But the customer service is SHI*TE. .
karohemd From: karohemd Date: October 3rd, 2005 11:30 am (UTC) (Link)
Their website says something different. 30GB cap on the 2MB and 3MB services *per month*, 3GB on the 1MB.

They might have introduced this only for new costumers, though.
yapman From: yapman Date: October 3rd, 2005 01:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
There was lengthy discussion about this when they introduced it. In reality, I don't think they've ever enforced it. Certainly the reply back to the complaining user group was that it's in place to give them an excuse to get rid of someone who's hammering the system so hard it causes issues for other people. Similar to the fact that up until relatively recently, they wouldn't let you run servers out of your home, according to the T&Cs, but they never actually enforced it.

FWIW, while I've had minor issues with ntl, I've had far worse with Telewest on our office business account.
