Corrosive Shame

Teeth Breaking
This was just going to be a post about Hard Candy, but I've somewhat been put off my stride by watching the opening credits to UFO and noticing an apostrophe crime. I can even forgive the clouds of smoke generated from the "underwater" SKYDIVER, but not a misplaced '.

Oh well.

Anyway, teeth crackingly good sweets. If you haven't seen it then do. If you are attached to your testicles then think slightly more carefully, then go anyway. It's not an easy or pleasant film to watch and in many ways is an "almost ran" rather than truly brilliant but it does show how cinema can be done.

The acting is excellent, the storyline is intriguing (rather than engaging) but at the end it throws it all away. I put this down to an american desire for ultimate Black and White over ambiguity and a need for closure. It would have been much braver and more to my taste, if not as neat and tidy, if there had been anagoresis rather than justified righteousness in the final scene.

If that doesn't make sense - go and see the film; if it does - do you agree?

Did you recognise the keyboard player with Depeche Mode on this tour?(Peter Gordino). He played the Skydiver captain Paul Carlin in UFO.

How's that for trivia!

I did know, but had forgotten! Trivia-tastic!

I thought the sudden push to have a solid storyline at the end seemed a bit odd, i'd been convinced all the way through you were either not going to know, or she'd assumed entirely wrong. And honour student is one thing, private stalker detective is quite another!

Was very good though, with added amusement coming from flywingedmonkey's obvious discomfort on the Testicle Scene..heheheh :P

I think it would have been much stronger if we had not had any definitive answer. It maintained the ambiguity all the way through very well, then had a complete change of mind it seemed.

Yeah, I thought it would have been better not to know for sure. Also, didn't anyone else see the "twist" at the end of the testicle scene coming a mile off?

Ooh, you made me go off and find the opening credits online to check.

I take it you mean:

Actually, I think this was probably considered valid written English in 1970. Y'see, it's a plural of an acronym, and I'm pretty sure popular opinion has changed on this over the years, from using an apostrophe to not using one. I'm sure I was taught at secondary school to use one. I still do sometimes: "he sent some SMSs" looks so ugly...

It wasn't 1970 though was it? It was supposed to be 1980. They got everything else right - like the cars and the widespread popularity of wigs and their role in paramilitary uniform - but I guess the crystal ball let them down.

Having watched Episode 1 (of an 8GB download) I was partly amused and partly shocked by the terrible sexism and sleaziness of some of the major characters. They wouldn't make it like that these days!

Oh yes. Alec Freeman letches over female characters throughout. He's my hero :-) There's all that smoking and drinking too.

Anagoresis?! whuts that then? its a bit like Anagnorisis.. does it have a similar meaning I'm not too proud to show how iggrant I am.

Not sure I fancy Hard Candy, but the desire for black and white is an imperative in most folk/allegorical/myth based tales to justify existance in a scary world where humans can just 'stop' for no reason and where lightening strikes. Sorry this is the abridged version of a sensible comment, I'm tired.

Probably is the same word - it's been a long time since I've typed it!

Comment is sensible enough :-)

Gosh that apostrophe thing is a real bug bear isn't it. I will now consider the wrist tap earlier this week to have been a hearty smack instead!

The problem is, I make the mistake as much as anyone else!
