I think the point of this list is being missed by many as these are in fact the "best loved" books not just the best. I don't think it means you're any more or less learned just because you haven't read all these books. I would imagine that a few of these books would have been studied when at school/college/uni and have perhaps remained chilhood favourites and books you would read/give to your children.

Yeah - there were a couple of authors where I'd have suggested other works - and there's no accounting for taste. Tbh I'd worry if I was a generic identikit BBC Book Lover...

I still think with a lot of these polls there is a case of "If you have ten examples, those examples are going to feature heavily in the results". In a kinda similar vein to what you're saying.
