Re: Given that logic...

That ties in nicely with the current outrage over University top-up fees and alternative proposed solutions. Should the state prop up members of society who choose to fritter their years away studying ultimately useless liberal arts degrees?

Re: Given that logic...

hmm, good question, firstly I think there should be parity between funding of students in Britain, however its done, the current situation seems a bit unfair.

I think peeps should pay for their higher education, when they can afford to, generally after they have passed and are working.
Its not quite on the same level as paying taxes to feed and clothe the vulnerable in society.

Re: Given that logic...

This is one area I actually haven't made my mind up on (gasp). As a full-grant student from a welfare background who studied Latin for four years and didn't even pass, choosing instead to get married and contribute nothing more to society than an extra citizen, I suppose I should empathize with Arts students from poor backgrounds. Yet the logic of "useful" degrees being more important and worthy of state funding does not escape me.

Part of me feels strongly that higher education should be free for all those that qualify - ie, the top 5%, not the current mess. A degree means nothing when everyone has one. Was a time when having it alone was enough to get you a top-flight job; nowadays more and more companies are looking at what the subject was before extending the hand of welcome.

I don't like the idea of starting one's working life several thousand pounds in debt either - theoretically, degree-holders should be contributing more than their fair share back to the state by means of the higher rate tax band, more VAT etc.

Dunno. I'd have to spend rather more time on the issue than I am probably willing to commit, especially with the release of KotOR and HotU so close.
